Eloise started the day bright and early at 5 am! She was just itching to celebrate.
One year ago, Eloise came into the world rather quickly.
Since then she has been on the move. It has been a wonderful year and we can’t believe her birthday is already here. Here are a few pictures from the year.
Phew. I’m almost caught up. Let’s see if I can knock this last month out before the 1st birthday on Friday.
The big news this month is walking! On January 15, 10 days shy of 11 months, Eloise took 3 steps. Each day after that it was more and more.
Eloise started saying a few words, mainly mama, dada, Greta. I think Greta was the first official word that we could definitely tie to a person. She was doing plenty of dada and mama babbling before, but not necessarily in reference to either parent specifically.
Eloise started the month in Tallahassee celebrating Christmas. She has had back to back month birthdays on big holidays, first Thanksgiving and then Christmas! She enjoyed opening gifts and playing with the oodles of new toys from the family. We spent the first few days of the month seeing all sorts of old friends of mine that were new to Eloise.
Eloise got two new teeth this month, the next top two. So she currently has two on the bottom and four on the top.
We came back north to a month of snow. We got several big snowfalls in January, so we spent a lot of time indoors. Although Eloise LOVES the snow, it wasn’t really all that easy to take two kids out in the snow, especially when one was just learning to walk and the other couldn’t walk very well in inches of snow. Eloise did get to try out the sled and loved that as well. Next winter I’m sure she will be out there every snowfall.
Eloise continues to be quite a little daredevil, climbing on top of everything. We haven’t had any real injuries other than some bumps and bruises, thank goodness. Eloise also likes to get into everything, especially the pantry. Most of the time I try to keep the open items high enough so she can’t get them, but sometimes she does, usually when my hands are covered in raw meat or something.
One of the favorite Christmas gifts was a little ride-on car. Eloise quickly learned how to move her feet to get around. She also loves to be pushed around by Greta.
Other than a quick trip up to visit Matt’s family for a birthday, we also went down to Annapolis to visit some friends. Eloise also enjoyed a trip to the children’s museum, which had a special toddler area.
Eloise is still an extra back archer and likes to arch whenever someone holds her who she has not approved. She has definitely entered the stranger anxiety phase and sometimes even family members are strangers to her. She continues to LOVE her daddy and can’t wait for him to get home from work and then follows him around until she gets the appropriate amount of snuggles.
Early this month Eloise learned to wave. She did it a few times and was so embarrassed about it that she stopped. The few times we pointed it out, she would bury her head in our shoulder.
Eloise’s hair is getting longer and is starting to curl quite a bit. I don’t have a great picture from this month, but you can see the little curls peeking out here.
Eloise likes to dance, but mostly just bounces her legs up and down. Sometimes she will just break out dancing when music comes on.
Eloise is a bit of an iffy eater. Sometimes she eats a good amount, others not much. She continues to love yogurt and popsicles and some fruit and veggies.
Despite Greta being quite mean to her at times, Eloise continues to think her sister is the greatest thing in the whole world. She wants to be where she is, doing what she is at all times. There are definitely periods where they get along just fine and Eloise adores when Greta picks out some dress up clothes for her to wear. Eloise also started trying to put things on her head, such as the princess crown or winter hats.
Eloise has finally started taking an interest in the cat, Albert. Greta was totally obsessed with him, but then Greta didn’t have a big sister to follow around. Eloise will try to crawl or walk after Albert to catch him and is slowly learning to pet gently.
And two more cute pictures of Ellie with mama and dada.
edited to add: I forgot a funny story about how Eloise has learned to torture her sister already. On Christmas morning we were at mass and Eloise had a toy. Eloise held it out to offer it to Greta. When Greta tried to take it Eloise yanked it back and laughed. While she might be the little sister, she is starting to hold her own with her big sister. Don’t mess with her.
And with that I’m caught up, until tomorrow when 12 months arrives!
This is the month of teeth! 4 teeth arrived this month, nearly all at the same time. Eloise is working on two more, but so far just four are showing.
Eloise figured out how to use a straw. She tried using Greta’s straw cup maybe once or twice before figuring it out. I went ahead and bought a few more so that way we only really have to use one kind of cup.
Eloise is quite the daredevil. She likes to try and stand on top of things, like rocking chairs.
At this point I think both Greta and Eloise are teaching each other new tricks. Greta used to never be very adventurous, but it seems that Eloise is rubbing off on her and so now they both try new things every day. Eloise loves to climb the stairs. She also learned this on nearly the first try. She gets a lot of practice since our play room is two steps down from the main living area. For a while there was a lot of falling down those two stairs, but my repeated attempts of showing her how to climb down feet first have finally paid off and she can go down them with ease.
I love this age when kids are learning so many new things and are so proud of their new tricks. Eloise is just like Greta and beams when you clap and cheer at a new trick.
Eloise has continued to adore her sister. She always wants to play with Greta and whatever Greta is playing with. This does create some fights, but so far we are all surviving.
Eloise has mastered the temper tantrum. Since she has been an expert back thrower for a while that really helps the temper tantrums have a little extra drama. So basically you take away something that she isn’t supposed to have and she immediately screams and throws herself backwards. Honestly it is a little funny to watch, especially when she is in crawling position. I want to get it on video, but most of the time I’m trying to rescue her from whacking her head on the floor or some other hard object.
Eloise loves to play in the mirrors upstairs. When Greta was this age we didn’t have any floor length mirrors, so she never really got to kiss herself in the mirror or look at herself.
This month we prepared for Christmas with lots of fun stuff. We went to NYC to see the lights, which included Eloise’s first train ride. We went to a little local place to see the decorations. We decorated our tree. We celebrated Christmas a few times before we left for FL.
Eloise got pretty good at feeding herself yogurt and making a mess.
Eloise started doing a little dancing this month.
Eloise started to show a bit of interest in books. She enjoys looking at the pictures and will sometimes sit for a short story. Her favorite task is taking the books off the shelf.
Boy, oh boy. I haven’t even published the 8 month post and Eloise is already well into her 10th month (this is when I started writing this, and now Eloise is less than a week from her first birthday). This month Eloise started doing a bit more talking. She definitely says mama, although she says it to mean many things, although often it is for me.
Eloise got her first cold this month. Babies with colds are so pathetic, and Eloise was certainly no exception.
Eloise started to consume more food this month, an actual measurable amount. She enjoys most foods, although her favorite is probably yogurt and popsicles. I make popsicles with fresh and frozen fruit and a little water to help them blend up nicely. I may start adding yogurt when she finishes off the current batch.
Eloise’s first tooth popped through the gums this month. It was just barely through, so I don’t have a picture from before she turned 9 months old.
Eloise loves to get into everything. She picks every little speck of food/trash/whatever off the floor and puts it into her mouth. It is quite difficult to get your finger in her mouth to swipe it out, but most of the time I manage.
Eloise loves being outside. She continues to get upset if Matt or Greta get to go outside and she doesn’t. And she is usually quite upset when we come back inside.
Eloise has turned into a big daddy’s girl. She loves her daddy so much. She gets so excited to see him and wants to go everywhere with him.
Eloise’s balance is getting much better. She can stand unassisted for brief periods (maybe 10-30 seconds) if she feels like it. Often she will just immediately sit down, but sometimes she will try to hold herself up.
We have a speedy crawler on our hands. If she has something she isn’t supposed to, we will call her name, and often it startles her and she throws it to the side and speeds away as fast as she can, as if to say I wasn’t doing anything wrong. Occasionally Eloise will crawl away so fast that her legs get ahead of her arms and she face-plants the floor.
Eloise has quite the quick temper. She does not like it when you take something away from her and screams quite loud in protest.
Eloise celebrated her first Halloween this month! She was a monkey. My mom was also visiting for Halloween so she got to see the girls in their costumes. Eloise wasn’t really sure what it was all about, but didn’t mind her costume too much since it was basically pants and jacket.
Eloise’s turned 9 months old on Thanksgiving and we celebrated with Matt’s family.
On Friday the weather was absolutely gorgeous! It gave us a taste of spring. We went to the zoo in the morning and then had a lovely late afternoon playtime outside. Oh how these children have missed playing outside.
Boy, was it muddy. But a little mud never hurt anyone.
Too bad Saturday it was back to winter with huge gusty winds that knocked over everything in the back yard and snow predicted for tonight. Spring will be here soon and we can’t wait!
Let’s just call this month the head-hitting month because boy did Eloise hit her head a lot this month. Eloise LOVES to stand, but well she isn’t all that coordinated yet, so she falls over often or gets knocked over. Eloise is just dying to walk. This month she became a pro at pulling up and even did a little walking along things.
Eloise finally converted to a full crawl about a month after starting the tummy crawl. One day she was doing all tummy crawling, the next all regular crawling. She is now in every single room of the house trying to get into stuff.
Eloise can get up the two steps that go into the play room, which is nice for her. But she can’t quite figure out how to get down, so she will sometimes dive head-first down them. Luckily they aren’t very big steps, they are carpeted, and there are only two of them.
Eloise’s favorite person continues to be her big sister. She loves to be anywhere that sister is and follows everywhere.
This month we traveled to Michigan to visit some of our college friends. Eloise enjoyed meeting them and getting passed around quite a bit.
We also had a visit from Aunt Donna. Eloise of course loved Aunt Donna and her silly antics.
Eloise is still not eating a ton of stuff. She loves to gnaw on things, but usually ends up spitting them out. She especially loves frozen veggies since they feel good on the gums.
Thankfully it was still warm enough to do some outside activities this month since Eloise LOVES the outside. Anytime Greta and Daddy go out without her she immediately starts crying. She even crawls over to the door and stands there banging on the window to let them know she wants to come out as well. We went and picked out pumpkins and also went to pick apples this month.
We took a trip to the zoo before Halloween and Eloise got to wear her Halloween costume, a monkey.
Eloise is quite a little fish. She loves the water and kicking her legs. She loves to kick her legs out of the water as well, so it is no surprise that she kicks them in the water. She also tries to paddle her arms to get the toys. She is the star of her swimming class.
Ellie’s hair is coming in quite blond and her eyes are still very blue. Again, no surprise here 🙂
1. In two weeks, this little one will turn one years old! That means I have two weeks to get caught up on her monthly posts. So be warned that there will be some old posts popping up and Eloise is walking not crawling in real life 🙂
2. Both girls have been sick this week. Some nasty cough, runny nose, fever yucky thing. Eloise was sick first and is now better, but Greta is still in the heart of it. Last night I said “Greta, your eyes look so…” and she said “blue”. Yes Greta, exactly what I was thinking.
3. There has been lots of snuggling around here.
4. Last Sunday it was nice and warm (40s) so Matt finally got out and made the snow family that Greta has been asking for with each snow. They are now melting and looking a little sad, but they were cute for a day or two.
5. Eloise is quite the messy little girl.
6. Just a cute picture of Eloise and me.
7. And Matt with his girls.
We are still living in a winter wonderland over here. Last night we got ice! We have some HUGE icicles hanging from our roof. It’s strange, our house is the only one with big huge icicles.
And a snowman that Matt and Greta made a while ago. Sadly the snowman toppled over shortly after this picture was taken.
